(C33) [Legend of the Galactic Heroes F.C. (Various)] CHESS GAME FINAL - CHESS GAME III (1987)
(C33) [銀河英雄伝説 F.C.(よろず)] CHESS GAME FINAL - CHESS GAME III (1987) 昭和 62 年
The final installment to one of the oldest known Legend of the Galactic Heroes F.C.s of their day, Chess Game was first allegedly published in 1984 with works based on the original novelization of LOGH. The circle concluded activities for Comiket 33 in 1987 with this particular issue, whereas its the 3rd volume in the Chess Game imprint. Volumes 1-2 haven't been sourced as of yet, however, the particular circle activities tentatively began in 1984. The first illustration is taken from the original Chess Game imprint when it was established and ends with an 'updated' version of this very drawing as a closer.
Many prolific BL / Yaoi mangaka were a part of the circle and contributed a variety of short stories, commentaries and manuscripts to this particular issue, some of whom are active to this very day. In regards to the depictions of the characters from LOGH, this saddles a unique pre-TV version of each character with lots of personal interpretations from the authors. Some ascribe to the very first depictions of say Reinhardt while others depict Oberstein or Ruenthal in modern ways. Ruenthal takes a big stage in this work, especially his relationship with Elfriede von Kohlrausch and his death. The straddling of both heterosexuality and homosexuality depict Ruenthal as a bisexual man, which is a first in our collection.
Further activities from the circle have not been documented post this particular issue. Acquired from "Tarukun" of the Sannomiya Ekimae used books shop in Hyogo, who shipped me their entire stock of LOGH works. Much thanks to them for their help and generosity!
This book was sold at the Winter Comiket of 1987 (December 26 to December 27, 1987) at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center (TRC) / Tokyo Logistics Center Main Exhibition Hall in Tokyo, Japan. This specific timeframe is very unique to doujin artists at the time as it marked the beginning of a historic era known to fans as the "Comiket Exile." The convention had outgrown its usual home at the Harumi Fairgrounds, forcing organizers to temporarily move the event to the smaller TRC venue for Comikets 31, 32, and 33 before they were ultimately able to return to Harumi. Getting a spot was exceedingly hard, so this book is quite valuable.
