(C18) [IMPRINT (Mahito Katsuragi / Various)] MIDNIGHT MESSAGE (1981)
(C18) [IMPRINT (葛城まひと / よろず)] MIDNIGHT MESSAGE (1981) 昭和 55 年
MIDNIGHT MESSAGE was created during a particular rift in the early 80s yaoi / BL Comiket culture, namely among older fujoshi & fudanshi vs younger members of thie group. With the advent of the lolicon boom and the changing landscape of ero works being introduced and permitted on the sales floor, many older fujoshi and fudanshi authors felt a variety of emotions surrounding these variances in changes. Where some exited and began their own successful mail order doujinshi models, set up private publishing clubs or pursued commercial exposure, many remained on the Comiket circuit selling their works in challenge of this rapidly changing environment. While staunchly erotic works were once socially taboo in theme at Comiket, albeit not unallowed, it would be the introduction of bishoujo works that would open the floor for more 'grey era' expression of homosexual themes etc.
Many of the authors who participated in this imprint had been a part of the earlier bishounen / shonen-ai scene that dominated Comiket during its inception and into the mid to late 70s, namely with works surrounding Takarajima, Space Battleship Yamato and Space Pirate Captain Harlock. With mecha works around the Robot Romance series as well as Mobile Suit Gundam's fame, these artists thrived until the onset of the 80s at Comiket. Many younger fans began to not only not relate to these series at all, but didn't gravitate to them considering the time. Many male Bishoujou artists, while familiar with these series, were not into queer representation, although many worked alongside and even supported said artists.
It is uncertain as to if Midnight Message continued in its imprint or under the circle itself, however, many of the artists were well known at this point, some of which who went on to be important mangaka as well as successful in adult BL circles by the late 80s and early 90s. This particular issue is signed on the back and was sold at Comiket 18. Many of the themes, even by their day and age, were deemed 'alternative' and more hardcore than usual.
